Our dog was diagnosed with cancer last fall. He had several mast cell tumors on his belly that started off as little pimples but grew quickly into tumors. We took him to several doctors and surgeons to figure out the best course of action. He ended up having two surgeries and almost four months of chemotherapy. I am happy to announce that he is now cancer free, but I was a rough couple of months for the little guy.
When your furry family member is suffering from a disease or illness, you are willing to do anything to help them get better. The chemotherapy did a number on his body so we looked at supplements to help keep him strong. After reading many articles on the benefits of CBD for pets, we decided to try it out.
After just a few doses, we saw a huge difference in energy levels and his bodies ability to bounce back after each treatment
Note: Here in California, most pet stores carry a line of CBD products for pets. However, since Congress passed the Farm Bill last year, CBD derived from hemp, is now legal in all 50 states.
Benefits of CBD for Pets
There have been many studies on the effects of using CBD to treat pets with disease and illness. Here are some of the biggest benefits:
- Rheumatoid Arthritis
- Irritable Bowel Syndrome (IBS)
- Parasitic Infections
- Bacterial Infections
- Skin Problems
There are several forms of CBD supplements, from chewy edibles to oil tinctures. We tried both but ended up sticking with the oil tinctures during Oliver’s treatment. After he was given a clean bill of health we switched to chews and treats. The CBD oil only took a few minutes to kick in, while the chews took a little longer.
How much CBD do I give to my pet?
The dosage depends on the severity of the condition and the type of illness. CBD can be taken in lower amounts as well as high concentrations. Sometimes a low dosage is enough to treat the symptoms, while other cases require a higher dosage.
To determine the proper dosage you should consult your veteran first. The normal dosage ranges from 1 mg to 5 mg, depending on the weight of your pet. For pets that weigh 10 Ibs and under, it is recommended to start 1mg of CBD, once or twice per day. Start with a lower dose and gradually increase the dosage over time.
